I have been down because up was too hard

I have been failing because succeeding is WORK

I have lost my way because staying the path might take all that I have

THEN

I remembered my grandmother and grandfather

And their grandmother and grandfather

I looked back at what their paths had to offer

I saw the footsteps

I counted the miles

I weighed the load

I wondered with great awe how they kept going

Though their legs faltered

And their feet wearied

I wondered with great awe WHY

When they fell they got up WHY

When they were shaken they would not submit WHY

I knew some would never taste freedom

I knew some would never have the liberty of education

So I asked myself WHY did they never give up the fight

Then I knew why

They were thinking of the future generations

Holding fast to that dream that was never a matter of choice

So now I must get up because nothing is too hard

So now I must succeed because failing is not working

So now I must stay the path because straying might mean I did not give all that I have

THEN

Push even when you are wearied

Push even when you can take no more

Push even when you do not know what lies tomorrow

Because those who went before you did not stop

Because the dream must be carried on

Because the dream must be carried on
