O n e Y e a r A n i v e s a r y
As his brothers and sisters in the athletic realm will attest to, Morrey spent much of his brief life training and participating in track and field, one of his beloved endeavors out in the elements of our Seattle climate, days mostly like today – and sometimes colder, wetter and soggier. We thought it only appropriate to hold this event out of doors in honor of that. So on behalf of the Browns and the Baha’i community, I would like to thank you all to for gracing us with your presence and your desire to come to celebrate Morrey’s brief life. There have already been two events honoring him, one held by his brother Ajan in the DC area and one held in San Luis Obispo, Morrey’s resting place. There are many private ceremonies occurring all over the country, including one where his MT grandma and some close family friends who hosted the boys on their visits there will be tracing the steps of where they went – and both Baha’i and Blackfeet prayers being said at each stop. Morrey Aren Brown, our beloved son (and illustrious sea-goat), and friend to everyone he met, did in fact ascend on September 20, 2007 around 6:20 PM. His life span (‘the dash’) amounts to 225.75 months, 1004.3 weeks, 6,832 days, and more celestial smiles than we could ever count. He was buried on the day of the Feast of Mashiyyat (or ‘Will’) on a Thursday afternoon in San Luis Obispo, California, on the central coast, 1,020 miles from his home. He was conceived on his mother’s birthday and arrived in this world, to our great delight, on December 28th 1988 at 12:10 PM, a crisp winter morning in Spokane, Washington, just a few weeks after his brother’s and my birthdays, and a few days after Christmas. A 9 lb. 10 oz., 22” bundle of joy, he was in the neonatal intensive care when those big, broad shoulders of his interfered with his delivery and caused him to have trouble breathing. His nurse was a sweet Baha’i lady who wrote the short obligatory prayer on a piece of paper and taped it to his glass bassinet. As we all know or have since learned by now Morrey Aren strove for excellence in all things, he drove for the finish line, he stoked latent intelligence in all of his peers, he stroked diligently on the piano, he raised the bar clearing - it with room to spare, he dove into learning the sciences, art/culture and dance. But the real essence of Morrey, however, is that he mastered the art of not wanting, because he wanted to teach the art of mastering oneself only. He often was so deep in thought he stored the lettuce in the pantry (lettuce in the pantry?-Morrey!). This and other Eisteinesque behavior forced us on more than one occasion to asked Morrey, “where is your cell phone, coat, track shoes, etc?” For those of us who knew him most, we witnessed him, like some culinary pharaoh, he would construct a pyramid of food only to consume it – entirely, all further evidence, that he lived lively and lovingly, and laughed as much as humanly possible – both with and at us. So much so, that it was the Will of Him, our Lord, who called Morrey on that late evening, much too early for us, beckoning him on. Unflinching, unafraid, and quite fearless, he must have stepped forward into that great unknown - trusting, always trusting, as Morrey was, of his faith, the world, his family, humanity, and his God. With his shoulders broad and square, he thrust into our air, he ran with quickness on earth, he blazed many trails as a young old soul, and he floated peacefully into the heavens. With the utmost obedience to the covenants of his faith and we as his guardians in this world, he most assuredly does so now with increasing measure in the world he now occupies – the Abha Kingdom. So what do WE do now? How do WE go on? May we suggest the words Morrey so eloquently spoke and which are etched on the face of his monument as handsomely as Morrey was and lived? “Be legendary – Let your actions reflect the future, not the present”
